How To Use The Different Types of Motivation To Help Your Team Excel

We always talk about motivation, but did you know that there are various types of motivation?

 

You might have heard of these two types of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. This describes if motivation comes from the inside of an individual or external subjects. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

 

Here are several different types of motivation and an example each for extrinsic and intrinsic sources:

Motivation is like the fuel that starts your engine and keeps it running. You need to pick the right kind of fuel to achieve this. It is the same with motivation.

 

Motivation drives behavior, and understanding how to use different types of motivation with your team will improve your team's productivity and work quality.

Types of Motivation and Their Application in the Workplace

1.  Understand the Motivations of Your Team Members

You need to understand what makes your people tick. And believe me, you can have people doing the same job with different motivations. Not everyone wants to be the next top manager, and people also have very different personal backgrounds.

 

You need to understand all of these. Therefore, you should carefully listen when your team speaks about their backgrounds, especially when they share their concerns and worries. Another way of achieving it is through professional development discussions regularly at work. Invite them to an open discussion of what they want to achieve and help them craft a plan to get there.

 

2. Don't Judge the Motivation of Others

No single motivation is better than the other when it comes to driving your employees to make decisions. Therefore, I strongly advise you to take all of them seriously and not project your own on others.

 

If someone in your team has financial troubles in their personal life, the chances are high that this outweighs career ambitions, at least at this moment. And the person could leave a great work environment with you in favor of a better paycheck.

 

Conversely, a person with career ambitions could leave a well-paid job for a career opportunity, even if the new job pays worse.

 

3. Create Appropriate Incentives and Reward In Line With Your Team's Motivations

Once you know what makes your team tick, use this.

 

For example, be transparent about bonus payments for high performance, or negotiate with HR for a better salary to keep your top performers. Create opportunities for your team to shine and be visible across the business, creating opportunities for better work assignments or promotions.
